ReAct-ing positively to unemployment

With thousands of people being made redundant in Wales, the Welsh Assembly’s ReAct scheme is helping people react positively to unemployment.

Debra Waters is one of many Welsh Assembly ReAct funded learners currently working towards her ECDL qualification after successfully completing Microsoft Office courses at Ecom Learning Solutions. Debra has over 17 years of social services experience behind her, yet after changing careers to work as a sales office manager she was made redundant.

Despite having many qualifications including holding an Institute of Supervisory Management (ISM) diploma in Management, Debra knew that it would be tough being one of 109,000 people currently unemployed in Wales and that training was the way forward. Debra's employer had made her aware of the Welsh Assembly's ReAct scheme and how it can provide up to £2500 towards the cost of re-training.

After searching the internet, Debra chose two training providers. She visited both and was particularly impressed with Ecom's friendly environment, “I was impressed at the welcome, facilities and support from the beginning.” Debra therefore chose to undertake training which would compliment her existing qualifications, give her an in-depth working knowledge of Microsoft Office and help her to gain employment.

After a discussion with Ecom staff, Debra realised that gaining the ECDL qualification would greatly enhance her job prospects. Debra set out to complete a range of Microsoft Office courses which would culminate in sitting her ECDL examinations. Debra also opted to study courses in Finance, Business Management and Administration.

Following her training Debra stated that the Ecom training centre was “fantastic” and that “the staff and tutors are fantastic, I cannot praise them enough, the quality of the courses and learner support were excellent.” Since completing the courses, Debra feels she has improved self esteem, she said “I enjoyed the experience immensely. I learned a lot and it has given me a lot more confidence. Without the ReAct funding I would never have afforded to go on these courses.”
